What Are The 3 Dimensions of Functional Breathing?

As you're reading this, see if you can slow your breath , fit your tongue to the roof of your mouth , and sit a little taller. By doing so, you are starting to improve the three dimensions of functional breathing.

What are the 3 Dimensions of Functional Breathing and why should you care about them?

Breathing Biochemistry - this dimension of functional breathing refers to how well you're exchanging blood gasses (Oxygen, Carbon Dioxide, and Nitric Oxide). When you learn to nasal breathe  and breathe lighter throughout the day, night, and during physical exercise, you deliver more oxygen to bodily tissues, which increases brain power, cellular energy production, hydration, endurance, restoration, and more.

Breathing Biomechanics - this dimension of functional breathing refers to the physical movement involved in the process of breathing. Here, we consider how to optimize the use of your diaphragm and accessory muscles of respiration to most efficiently exchange gases, support proper posture, and protect the spine.

Breathing Psychophysiology - this dimension of functional breathing refers to the relationship between the mind and body. It explores how different breathing patterns can affect mental states, emotions , and physiological functions, and vice versa. For example, slow, deep breathing can activate the parasympathetic nervous system, promoting relaxation and reducing stress, while shallow, rapid breathing can trigger the sympathetic nervous system, leading to heightened arousal or anxiety. Many people are unaware that they are hyperventilating throughout the day, and become accustomed to anxiety as a baseline without understanding the role breath plays.

Improving your breath on each of these dimensions allows you to tap into greater physical and mental fitness . Being healthy isn't just about the kind of foods you eat, the podcasts you listen to, or the exercise protocols you choose. More fundamental is how you are breathing because it enables the healthy function of every other bodily system.

This week is the last opportunity to sign up for my Oxygen Advantage® Instructor Training on Hilton Head Island. No prerequisites required, just a willingness to learn and grow. After the training, you'll have the tools to implement functional breathing by understanding the science and practical exercises to enter a new dimension of health.
